Deerfield Beach Softball

Our Traditional Pastime

During the 1940’s, adult softball became a major Deerfield Beach pastime. When Pioneer Park was built, the baseball field was the centerpiece. When there was a softball game it was a social event. There were picnics and crowds gathered to watch and be entertained.

The teams were made up of men like, the world’s biggest baseball fan J.D Butler and local electrician Red Arenu.

There was Stan McCall, who ran a City Service station at the corner of Hillsboro Blvd. and Dixie Highway, he went on to become the much loved Coach McCall.  Other early players included Bob Butler, Cecil Smoak and Ike Swain.
